Does Insurance Cover the Abortion Pill in Minnesota?
MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance cover abortion under the following conditions[1]:
- The pregnant woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by, or arising from the pregnancy itself that would, as certified by a physician, place the member in danger of death unless the abortion is performed
- Pregnancy resulted from rape or incest
- The abortion is determined to be medically necessary by the treating provider
However, private insurance providers may not cover the abortion pill.
How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost Without Insurance?
As of October 2024, abortion providers charge up to $800 for medical abortion or abortion pills.[2]
Additional Abortion Pill Costs to Consider
You should also look into the cost of follow-up care if the pill fails or if you experience severe side effects, such as:
- Allergic reaction. If you’re allergic to any ingredients in vaginal misoprostol, you could go into anaphylactic shock.[3]
- Hemorrhaging. It’s normal to bleed for a while after taking the abortion pill. However, if you soak through two full-size sanitary pads per hour, for two or more hours, you could be hemorrhaging.[4]
- Incomplete abortion. Incomplete abortions occur when some pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus after misoprostol has been taken. Emergency surgery may be needed to remove the remaining tissue and prevent infection.[5]
- Infection. If you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever for more than 24 hours after taking the second medication, an infection may have developed. You may need antibiotics or even surgery to treat your condition.[6]

Receive an Ultrasound
You may be wondering why you’d want an ultrasound if you’re considering the abortion pill. The answer is that ultrasounds provide the insight needed to make an informed and empowered decision for an unexpected pregnancy! They determine two key things about your pregnancy: viability and gestational age.
- Pregnancy Viability. A viable pregnancy means that the pregnancy is progressing properly. The goal is to rule out a nonviable pregnancy, such as a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy—in either case, specific care would be needed.
- Gestational Age. Gestational age refers to how far along you are in your pregnancy. This is important to know, as you can’t take the abortion pill beyond 10 weeks of pregnancy.[7]
